Ask the ProfessorArchives2007 April 03: Question: At the Free The Children Summer Conference a few years ago, you were telling us that we should be aware that really bad child labour is used in the chocolate industry. Can you tell me what the situation is, whether there is an alternative type of chocolate (such as fair trade) I can purchase, and if there is anything else I can do to help? Answer 2007 March 07: Question: I know that the UNCRC is a really important document in telling the world what they have to do to give children their rights. But I don't really understand this document, how it works, what exactly it says, and how it is enforced in the world. I also want to know what my Youth In Action Group can do to help promote the UNCRC and to help kids around the world to get their rights. Answer 2007 February 08: Question: I recently saw the movie Blood Diamonds and was really disturbed by everything I saw. I heard you give a talk at Free The Children conference about the effects of war on children, and you told us about Sierra Leone and the diamond trade. Can you refresh me about the connections between diamonds and war? And can you also provide an update on anything that has been done to stop it and what we kids can do to help stop blood diamonds? Answer 2006 December 06: Question: I'm starting to do my shopping for Christmas and I'm having a hard time because I want to get really great gifts for my family but I don't want to get them things that would be bad for kids in another country. When I told my friend this, she just told me that I shouldn't worry about it because there's no way to avoid buying bad stuff. I thought maybe you would have some suggestions so that I can shop better. Answer 2006 November 27: Question: I heard on the news that there’s a ceasefire taking place in Uganda and that it might end a really bloody war. What’s going on there? What has it meant for the youth in Uganda and what’s going on with this ceasefire? Answer |
